Renault has unveiled its new non-rechargeable hybrid powertrain with a combined output of 160 hp, replacing the old 143 hp unit. The four-cylinder petrol engine is now a 1.8-liter unit producing 109 hp, while the electric units continue to deliver 49 hp and 20 hp, respectively.
The battery offers a slightly higher capacity (1.4 kWh compared to the previous 1.2 kWh), and the associated transmission remains the multi-mode, clutchless automatic gearbox.
Another change to the E-Tech 160 full hybrid powertrain is the combustion engine injection, which is now direct instead of indirect, improving performance and efficiency. This results in a 25% increase in torque, reaching 2,000 rpm.
The first two cars equipped with this transmission were the Captur and Symbioz. Thanks to this technology, both cars accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a maximum of 9.1 seconds, making them even faster.
Both sports cars boast lower fuel consumption: 4.4 liters per 100 km in both cases, compared to 4.7 liters for the old 143 hp hybrid version.
Both models benefit from the Eco label and feature a regenerative braking system to recharge the battery faster while driving, which is useful, for example, on long inclines.
Returning to the multi-mode gearbox, Renault has promised a series of improvements “to make gear changes faster and smoother.” The previous gearbox was not particularly fast when overtaking or shifting gears.
Thanks to the E-Tech 160 full hybrid engine, the towing capacity of both the Captur and Symbioz has increased from 750 to 1,000 kg, making them ideal for anyone who needs to tow a trailer or caravan.
