General Motors, the American auto giant, announced it is recalling 721,000 SUVs and trucks worldwide due to an engine defect that could lead to a loss of power and increase the risk of a crash.
The company is recalling 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV models; Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engines.
GM indicated that the connecting rod and crankshaft components may contain manufacturing defects that could lead to engine damage or failure. The recall affects approximately 600,000 vehicles in the United States.
General Motors announced that it has identified 12 crashes and 12 injuries in the United States that may be related to the recall issue. Dealers will inspect the engine.
The company added that vehicles that pass the inspection will be fitted with a higher-viscosity oil, which will also require a new oil filler cap and oil filter replacement.
For information, General Motors has previously closed three investigations into this issue since 2022 based on available field safety information.
Vehicle recalls are a major problem for automakers, increasing costs, especially if the issue affects a large number of vehicles, Stellantis launched a large recall campaign this year to fix a problem with airbags caused by the Japanese manufacturer Takata.
