Truck manufacturer MAN has begun mass-producing nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries in Nuremberg, announcing an additional 150 million euro investment in the site.
In the presence of Bavarian State Minister-President Markus Söder and Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger, MAN announced that the funds will be used to “build expertise in battery technology and increase the depth of value creation.”
Module battery packs are currently being assembled in Nuremberg, and in the future, modules made from individual cells will be produced. MAN sources the cells from CATL in Erfurt.
The current annual production capacity is 50,000 battery packs, with the potential to reach 100,000 batteries, expansion of production will depend on demand for battery-powered electric vehicles.
MAN, part of the German Volkswagen Group, expects the total operating costs of an electric truck to be close to those of a diesel-powered truck.
MAN is also boosting diesel engine production in Nuremberg with 250 million euro . “This investment in Nuremberg amounts to half a billion euros,” MAN CEO Alexander Flaskamp explained, according to German media.
