Nissan Motor Co. announced it will not accept new US orders for two Infiniti SUVs made in Mexico, following president Donald Trump’s auto tariffs, sharply reducing operations at its joint venture plant.
The Japanese automaker announced it will maintain two production shifts for the Rogue SUV at its Smyrna, Tennessee, plant, after announcing in January that it would end one of the shifts this month.
Nissan will not accept any additional orders for the Infiniti QX50 and QX55 SUVs for the US market, which are produced at the Compass plant in Mexico, which Nissan operates jointly with Mercedes-Benz.
Nissan said production of the two models sold in other markets is expected to continue, and it is not yet clear how much production will be sold in other markets.
Only two Infiniti models were exported from Mexico to the United States, according to data from Mexico’s National Statistics Agency.
A spokesperson for the Japanese automaker Nissan stated that the models are produced and exported to markets such as Mexico, Panama, the Middle East, and Canada.
Nissan is facing difficulties in the United States due to its aging vehicle lineup and a shortage of hybrid models. It is particularly vulnerable to the new tariffs, as it exports more vehicles from Mexico to the United States than any other Japanese automaker.
Nissan’s problems have led the company to cut its profit forecast three times in the past fiscal year and had its debt rating downgraded to junk status. The Japanese company is also suffering from financial problems and declining sales.
The new US tariffs have affected the global auto industry, with European automakers beginning to close and reduce operations at factories that export to the United States, as happened with Stellantis and Nissan.
The US auto market could see higher prices and a shortage of supply due to Trump’s recent decisions.
